South Africa launches new Mandela bank notes
The south African government kept
the promise they made on the 22nd anniversary of Mandela’s release
from prison after serving 27 years for his stand against white majority by issuing
new bank notes with the image of the former south African president Nelson
Mandela on Tuesday.
The
new notes were first used by the Reserve Bank of South Africa Governor Gill
Marcus at her neighborhood fruit market in Pretotia. She said that “Madiba” (Mandela’s
popular name in South Africa) represents something special in South Africa and
the world at large. She also said that Mandela is really an extraordinary
person and immortalizing him is a way which they pay tribute to him.
94
year old former South African President Nelson Madiba Mandela became South
Africa’s first black president in 1994.
